Default Essex Medieval Heritage Society

and the Shire of Starleaf Gate

Living History in Windsor there are two big groups... the group Essex Medieval Heritage Society is on, and the other is the Society for Creative Anachronism.

Essex Medieval Heritage Society is a Local group. The SCA is an international group. There are people that hang out together that are part of both group, or only part of one. The reason EMHS began was that the Windsor "powers that were" would not let the group operate bingo's, and other fundraisers under the world wide organisation the SCA.org. The EMHS was born so that "the group" could do local fundraisers and be recognised as a local community group. Having this group meant that they could run Bingo's, and do other things in the town to support and give back to our own community. Over time, the world changed and we were no longer able to operate Bingo's. However, we were still encouraged to do local demonstration and show the community what we did and how we were supporting Windsor and Essex County. The perk of having the EMHS was that we raised money and bought a few thing and some other cool stuff.
It is a group that works well in the community,(earliest records were from 1985 or 1986.)
When we do our local events, we tell everyone about the world wide organisation called the Society for Creative anachronism. For the most part, we do our demonstrations the same way as we do an SCA demo. EMHS is encouraged to do local events so that people know that there is a local community feel. Because of this, we have been given opportunity to do events (for little or no cost) with the Rotary club, Sportsman club and other local organizations.

The EMHS has insurance similar to the SCA, but the SCA has insurance for fighters, and the EMHS is more arts and sciences and does not fighting. When we do demonstrations, we do it under the EMHS name, and any donations go toward the paying for the locker where the tents are and for the insurance in case anyone trips over a tent peg at a demo.

The demonstrations we do all year long (with the exceptions of the Clancy Day, which is an SCA event) are under the Essex Medieval Heritage Society name. You can be part of any group( steampunk, zombie, what ever) to play with us. We will not tell anyone they can not participate in our local group events.(Everyone can participate, providing they follow the rules of the event)

On Sunday night, and Thursday nights, we get together as one group of people. The SCA members, and the EMHS members- playing and learning together. We do fight practices in the same areas, and the fighting always follows any rules of the SCA fighting. There is always a marshal or two present for any fight practices and demo that occur. If there is no one that can act as a marshal, then we do not generally do any fighting involving the public. Both the SCA and the Essex Medieval Heritage society hold meetings on Sunday nights when they need to discuss demos, or the SCA events.
We try hard to not have a division, conflict or animosity between the two groups of people hanging out and having fun together. This works well for both groups, and creates a stronger more unified group of people for both the SCA and the EMHS. I hope this clears up any confusion anyone has over the use of the two names when we are hanging out at practices or demos.
If you are interested in Knights, Lords and Ladies, Fencing, Fighting with a sword and shield, throwing axes and knives, Archery, Sewing, Spinning, weaving making chain maille then this is teh group for you.
